Next up was the vandalism scene where The Red Tribe breaks into The Green Tribe’s lair and trashes it. Why, you ask? Maybe they stole the Reds’ stash of canned tuna, or maybe invading others’ property and breaking shit is what people do to have fun in a world where there’s no Internet. We certainly don’t know. The fact is, these urban tribesmen were pissed off and looking for trouble.
The biggest problem with this scene was that we had no props, so we spent some days scavenging the furniture recycling places and looting discarded furniture at apartment buildings in Stockholm. After a lot of worrying and hard work we ended up with 6 TVs, one mattress that turned into a bed with some leftover fabric, a coffee table, a stereo, an old bicycle, some beer boxes as seating, beer bottles, an armchair and a couple of candles. Exactly what we needed for a respectable post-apocalyptic living area.
Sebastian, Tommy and Peter Wiholm, the director, drove the equipment to the location and everyone on set helped with carrying the furniture inside the tunnel and setting up. Once The Green Tribe were done with their scenes, The Reds went berserk.
Like in the primitive society we were creating, we actually had no advanced equipment to break things with, so people picked up thick branches from trees nearby and used them as weapons. And since we had no spare props, there was only one chance to get the shots right.
One of the highlights of the day was when Elsa climbed on top of what looked like a fireplace and smashed this shit out of an old stereo. I have never seen anyone go from cheerful and cute to fucking violent that fast. Tommy, being the badass he is, demolished a wall of TVs, which actually exploded. He kept going despite the debris that filled the set. Linda and Sebastian took their anger out on chairs and bicycles and Mattias did probably the most impressive tableflip in the history of music videos.
Once Sebastian had burned the bed, which filled the whole place with toxic black smoke, we filmed the scene where The Red Tribe enters the gates of the tunnel, and called it a day.
